Common Causes of Peeling, Low-Moisture Skin

If your skin peels a lot, it could be because of a variety of things. Let’s take a look at some of the common factors.

In case there is soreness in the area and it is scratchy as well, then you might want to see if it is some allergy acting up. There are several allergens in cosmetic products that can cause such conditions. If you use a lot of cosmetics and cannot figure out which one might be causing the allergic reaction, then you have to apply them individually and see which one causes a tingling or warm sensation when applied. This is most often the allergen that is causing the excessively dry and flaky skin.

But, you need to realize that a lot of products can react in combination and trigger such reactions as well. A general average shows that US women use 11 cosmetics on a daily basis and men use 5 of them.

The products that contain alcoholic content or are petroleum based are likely culprits also. However, using single such products is harmless; it is when you are using them in combination that problems might occur.

One more thing you need to check is whether the affliction is only on the facial skin or also on different parts of the body. If it is present in other places too, then it could be some kind of dermatitis that you are suffering from. Symptoms of dermatitis are different from one individual to another.

Also, take a look at some of the prescribed medicines you are on. Problems are commonly observed with medications such as isotretinoin which is generally prescribed for the treatment of xeroderma pigmentosa, rosacea, a few kinds of cancer, harlequin ichthyosis and certain keratoses.

Before using any such medication, read the label for any possible side effects. Ask your chemist if you aren’t sure. A full body occurrence of dry and flaky skin could be some form of eczema or psoriasis as well. A red coloration indicates psoriasis in most cases. Profuse itching is a symptom of eczema.

If you have an eczema condition but it is not accompanied by itching, then it could be because of Type 2 Diabetes. A medical checkup is recommended because there could be other causative diseases.

Excessively exfoliating and dry skin could also be caused because you are moving out in the sun too much. Such peeling usually wears off when the rawness of your skin is gone.

Another cause is dandruff. Even though dandruff is in the scalp, it can make the flakes appear on the eyebrows and also on other facial hair in men.

If your problem of dry and flaky skin is seasonal, then it can be due to less humidity in your climate. Drink a lot of water; lack of moisture can cause this condition as well.

Dietary factors should also be considered as a cause. Deficiencies of retinol (vitamin A) and calciferol (vitamin D) can be causative factors as well.
